Sustainability

Our responsibility
never stops.

In our search to provide the best services, we found many answers, but we have equally uncovered questions still in need of addressing. How do we limit the effects of our operations in the context of today’s climate? How can we develop sustainably to have a positive impact on as many people as possible, from customers and partners to all the communities in which we operate?

We do not have all the answers yet, but to find them we are guided by the belief that solidarity is what drives sustainable progress for future generations. Each of us must act responsibly, and together we have the power to build a future that can only be sustainable. Therefore, we take responsibility for supporting four key areas: education, environment, technology, and entrepreneurship.

Our continuous journey towards
becoming a sustainable business

Carbon neutrality

Global warming and its effects on the climate are a cross-border issue, and decarbonizing the economy is a mission to which mankind needs to commit – now.

The goal for 2020 was to achieve complete carbon neutrality for our operations. We developed the GHG inventory, which includes all the emissions generated at the level of the group’s operations, representing the carbon footprint of eMAG group.

We then started the process of offsetting the remaining carbon emissions through our partnership with Green Tech, the first company in Europe to obtain carbon credits (VERs) from waste recycling on the voluntary market, the only Gold Standard accredited project in Europe.

Conservation of wild forests in Romania

We aim to contribute directly to wildlife conservation in Romania and we support the creation of a National Park in the Făgăraș Mountains through a strategic partnership with the Foundation Conservation Carpathia.  So far, we have saved and preserved 350 hectares of wild forests.

Commitment to the Environment

When we seek solutions together, the path to the answer gets easier. For this reason, we launched the Environmental Pledge (Angajament pentru Mediu), the first initiative to unite the Romanian business community under the common goal of limiting temperature rise to no more than 1.5˚C above pre-industrial levels. All participants in the Environmental Pledge have access to know-how and tools that can help them calculate their carbon footprint and define a practical action plan to reduce CO₂ emissions.

eMAG green operations

Decarbonizing the economy by 2050 is a priority for the European Union and achieving this goal requires the efforts of all actors involved.

The solution is to decouple economic growth from carbon emissions, a mission that each company must integrate into its business plan while accounting for the specifics of its field of activity. We act in several directions to achieve this goal:

  • Our logistics centers are accredited as sustainable buildings
  • We are gradually electrifying the Sameday Green Delivery fleet
  • We are expanding the easybox network, a sustainable last-mile delivery solution
  • We fight pollution through more environmentally friendly packaging
  • We offer responsible services for consumers and the environment
  • We support the circular economy and integrate new circular services into our offer

eMAG becomes UN Global Compact participant

To reiterate the pledge, we made in the Sustainability Plan, eMAG became a participant in the UN Global Compact, the world’s largest sustainable development initiative.

This way, eMAG reconfirms its sustainable development principles and strong commitment to implement a set of measures aimed at limiting global warming to 1.5°C, under the Paris Agreement.

Nouă ne pasă Foundation

We believe that education is fundamental to society’s progress and for this reason, education should never stop. To reiterate this belief, we support the projects implemented by Nouă ne pasă (“We care”) Foundation. The foundation was launched in 2012 as the eMAG Foundation, out of the belief that education stands at the core of building a democratic society based on respect, human values, and equal opportunities. To reflect this mission, in 2021, the eMAG Foundation was renamed as Nouă ne pasă (“We Care”) Foundation.

Between 2012 and 2021, the Foundation mainly implemented three major programs: “Hai la Olimpiadă!” (“Let’s go to the Olympics!”), “Nouă ne pasă” (“We Care”) and “140 de bătăi pe minut” (“140 heartbeats per minute”). Beyond the three major programs, the Foundation provides support for other projects as well.

Furthermore, in 2021 the Foundation launched two new programs – programming courses for children from small communities, and a grants program for other organizations active in the education field.

For children, parents, and teachers alike, the academic year 2020-2021 was a difficult one both professionally and personally. This was an even better reason for the foundation’s main programs, “Nouă ne pasă” and “Hai la Olimpiadă!” (“Let’s go to the Olympics!”) to adapt and continue to support enrolled children. Not only these programs, but the entire work of the Foundation was involved in supporting those who were in the front-line on fighting against the new coronavirus.

All these programs exist due to the support the Foundation constantly receives from all parties involved. The Foundation’s educational programs also enjoy the support and involvement of eMAG’s customer community, thanks to the donations they make in their shopping carts.

Yearly growth through eMAG Marketplace

Companies listed on the eMAG Marketplace platform are starting to see revenue growth from their first year of listing.

At eMAG Academy we share our experience with tens of thousands of Romanian entrepreneurs eager to learn how to grow their online businesses. We provide marketplace partners with useful and easily accessible resources for online business development.

Out of the desire to preserve and promote the national cultural values expressed through the craft, we launched the “Deschide România” (“Open Romania”) program in 2017. Through this initiative, we offer small local producers, NGOs with self-financing production activities, and authorized individuals who create craft products quick access to a national market, by exhibiting and selling their products on eMAG Marketplace.

eMAG Ventures

Through eMAG Ventures we want to create real added value and contribute to the rapid scale-up of companies founded by Romanian entrepreneurs, thus producing a visible impact on the digital economy. We are talking about accelerating investments, aimed at those companies that can grow rapidly with the help of technology and become future unicorns.

We want to finance companies driven by ambition and vision, which will contribute to the growth of the entrepreneurial ecosystem in Romania. We will offer them not only financing but also the know-how gathered in 20 years of activity in which we have constantly innovated.

The program is dedicated to companies that already have a working business model and can demonstrate that they have the maturity to make a relevant change in the markets in which they operate.

Innovation

When innovation stops, progress stops. Therefore, we assumed the role of promoter of the Romanian e-commerce sector from the very beginning. Our vision was to create a business model that helps both customers and other businesses in Romania. While customers can save time and money by shopping online, other businesses have the opportunity to sell their products, and services anywhere in the country and abroad, through eMAG Marketplace.

The dedicated mobile app, introduced in 2014, the automated translation system, and the automated warehouse in Joița municipality (Giurgiu County), which allows for the processing of up to 1.5 million parcels/day, are three representative examples of innovative projects developed by eMAG. These projects aim to improve customer experience and benefit local business partners, as well as facilitate the use of digital instruments among the population and the business environment.
